No problem, MK. I should have made that clear above, but either way, I really appreciate your willingness to help. When I started collecting I thought MNH was important. That was before I learned the old adage about gum being the most expensive substance on earth . But I have a nice album and I've spent several years getting it about 98% complete in the 1930 - 2000 decades all in MNH condition. So, I'd like to fill the remaining few holes with the same. |

I am a MNH collector too. I also have a nice used collection both USA. I find though after I get into the banknotes I start to settle for more used even for my MNH book. I just look for the better ones. |

I looked in my US stamp album, and found that I have all of these MNH, which surprised me. I am returning to collecting after a long absence and traveling alot in Europe, where I picked up alot of Geraman stamps.
I will try to post them. Sorry KirkS, but I have no extras. |

The 10c Alexander Graham Bell stamp is the one you want to keep in good shape; it's the high catalog value stamp in the entire set. Even though the print quantity was on par with the other 10c stamps of that series, the telephone company(?) ran a promotion back then and bought up a huge supply of the mint stamps for that promotion. It's one of a few cases where a promotional usage of a US stamp was significant enough to make a dent in the supply to create a permanent increase in catalog value of the MNH stamp. |

OK another stupid question from a newbie. What is NMH? I thought to be a good stamp it had to have gum still inplace, but see that some soak the gum off? |

No stupid questions here, Jay. We're all learning; we're just at different places along the curve. MNH means Mint Never Hinged as in the stamp has never been mounted in an album using a hinge. Some folks want MNH and pay a premium for them. Other folks don't mind hinged stamps since they say they only look at the front anyway :-) The question can turn into a huge debate. But it's really about your preference. Some other abbreviations: MH: mint hinged MLH: mint light hinge HR: hinge remnant (means a piece of the hinge is stuck to the back of the stamp) NGAI: no gum as issued By the way, here's a related thread: https://goscf.com/t/4795[Edited to add link] |

Thanks Kirk! Guess I won't worry about collecting MNH until I get a good collection started. Once I get my books from Amazon I won't be posting all these. Thanks again! Jay |
