I was browsing listings by NobleSpirit on ebay, and while scrolling through the images on this listing http://www.ebay.com/itm/NobleSpirit...em567c107584 , the third 15-cent black Lincoln stamp has what looks like a Z grill. I am definitely an amateur at determining grills on stamps, so I'm probably wrong. Just thought I'd point this out, since I'll at least gain knowledge from any answers.
Actually, it does come in a Z grill. Scott 85F, only two known. Highly unlikely I know, but it jumped out at me. Would still like to hear opinions from the experts.
I obviously havent got anything that good from them but I have got collections from them that had hidden "gems" so all the pictures they do are being taken by people who arnt thinking maybe I should take a better look at that!!
It is difficult getting a consistent count, but in 5 attempts I cannot get more than 16 rows on a vertical count. My horizontal count of the number of columns is even less consistent. However, I have not seen evidence that this has enough rows to make it a candidate for a Z grill. For me the toss up is whether it is an E or an F.
Rather than trying to count rows and columns in a scan, just remember that the Z grill has horizontal grill ridges - all the others are vertical. If I'm looking at the same stamp, the ridges appear vertical, so it can't be a "Z"
Thanks for the replies folks! I've been browsing Z grill stamps on ebay for a while, and I'm now seeing a difference between them and the one in question.
