Found a Champion stamp catalog on the flea market, there is no date, but since the last priced stamp is 1892, I believe it is from 1893. I scanned the US pages if anyone is interested. Note that in 1890 a private industrial worker in France was paid 5 francs a day, cost of 1kg bread was 0.35Fr, and 1L. milk 0.10Fr.
The important thing to notice is that the stamps that are scarce and expensive today were generally scarce and expensive then, too. Stamps almost never "become" scarce, they start out that way. There are very occasional exceptions; RO50 is s very scarce match wrapper that cats $2,750 even though they issued 8 million because no one saved them
I like the images. Could you do me a favour Mr. Luminati and give us a close up on the Confederate stamps on the last page of your post? I'd appreciate a closer look.
I assume these are woodcuts. The image of the one cent bears some resemblance to Frederick Douglass (although the angle is different from the famous photo of him). I wonder what the Confederates would have thought about that.
