KGB - The difference between 26 and 26A is the frame line. Type III (26) will have a continuous line, running through the margin between stamps. Type IV (26A) will have lines which end at the stamp design, not appearing in the margin.

As for the stamp in question here, the one decent corner - UL - appears to have been abraded away so that it looks like the more expensive type. Without having the stamp in hand, I have to call it a #26.

HOWEVER
I think that with the straddle, on cover with a clear intact Pittsford VT cds and the decent possibility of a green cancel, it may be worth a cert. Might be a chance it is a 26A.
