would anyone know why a 1926 stamp(scott628) would have A.E.F. on the wide left side selvage ?

That is the plate finishers initials.

This may have been Albert E Fischer. I know he did work on the Washington Franklins.

Agree with KGB, a June 1983 article in the US Specialist, "Check list of initials on the 1922 series flat plates" lists AEF = Albert E Fischer, as a siderographer (as opposed to a plate finisher).

John, cool! As an aside, Albert was also a plate finisher.
