Here is a recent item offered as "US Stamp # 499 Mint OGnh Block of 4 2 Cent Washington Rose 1917" http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Stamp-49...231713522844I was hoping to buy it because it is not a 499. It was started at 5.40, a high price for 499's. Sold for 130.39 Lucky the seller didn't use the BIN on ebay or use a different on-line auction site. I would like to think a clueless seller would get more by walking into a brick and mortar stamp store, but I am not so sure. I was snipe/outbid.

Wow......what a horrible mis-ID.....sorry you missed out on that one. My guess is that the winner will be putting that into an auction, and bid more than double the $130 bid. Not many Type Ia blocks out there.......thanks for posting...Ray |

All I can say is wow...
If I'd known about this I'd likely thrown a snipe at it of at least $500.00, maybe higher... |

Knowledge is good, I wouldnt have caught that. Even though I can think back at all the mistakes I made sellin stuff over the years and dont want to think about the ones I dont know about. I have made it back up by learning things and using to find good stuff. |

I'm impressed that some of you guys are able to spot these differences from online images alone. It is true that I don't handle W/F material much at all, so I could not begin to tell you what is special about this block (500?, 461?, 491?, ???) but some of you seem to have no problem spotting stuff like that on a quick pass.
Very impressive indeed. |

Dear Members, I am the seller of this block. The auction was cancelled. The truth is that I am certainly not a stamp expert. My father and his father were both stamp collectors. I am 60 years old and have been a R.I. real estate broker for 38 years. Things are slow so I wanted to try ebay. This block had 499d written on the back. After the auction ended I received a note from a fellow eBayer stating that it was listed incorrectly. He was detailed in his explanation that it was clearly a type 1a # 500. Quite a difference. I called ebay and with their blessing, they guided me through the process of cancellation. My feedback indicates that I try to go above and beyond what is necessary. In my real estate community I enjoy a reputation of being honest. I was hoping with hard work and honesty I would enjoy that reputation on ebay as well. Respectfully, Bob |

Yeah, that was very shady. Backing out on a contract. That listing ended normally with a high bidder and you should have sold to them.
How does anyone here know that if you don't get enough for it this time around you won't just back out again? I surely wouldn't waste my time bidding on it. |

It's not honest to represent a stamp as a certain catalog number when you really have no clue as to what it is. |
