Just for fun, and since I'm taking a break from my imagination with cork cancels, thought I'd share some stamps I have arranged into a city/state album.

Rhode Island cancels:

Providence, RI

Unknown (meaning I cannot make it out) city, RI.

I noted the year '99', is not in the circular time/date stamp, but outside, and to the lower right, between the circular and the ellipse. It appears to me either Jan or Jun 16 in the AM. I cannot make out what the bottom reads, where normally I see the year.

Another unknown city in RI. Possibly Oct or Sept 8 (?) not able to tell, 1891 and I don't recognize the pattern of the ellipse to the right. The time and date seem to be overlayed on one another, in the dial used (?) I thought the stamp, itself, it looked 'decent' as far as centering.

In the midst of all the New England cancels, it's a nice surprise to run across one that is from out west. My best guess at the city is Salt Lake City (?) in Utah, (I just now figured it out, while typing this post) Dec 20, 6PM, 1895.

Dec possibly, 1895 11 AM. I can't tell what city and state, or the ellipse to the right. It looks like 'OIL' I first thought Joilet, IL.

Comments, or possible answers, welcome, but please note, not expected. I'm just sharing, since some people have said they like looking, for the fun of it.

Feel free to post yours here. I particularly would enjoy looking at some Portsmouth, RI cancels. :D

Your 1899 duplex is Providence, R.I./ Sta. A.
External year dates are fairly common with duplex devices.

Your 1891 is likely Bristol, R.I.

wt1, found your thread in the US Covers forum, in regards to the Providence, RI cancel I posted first. I posted a couple of other examples there, that I have.

What is a PPO, as listed in the title?

Here is a Portsmouth, RI 4-bar cancel whith the bars coming loose easily fixed with a rubber band createing the makeshift vertical bars.

And a Providence marking on a parcel post package.

Three different examples of Fall River, MA on three different shades of Franklin.

Decent center on the stamp, perfs seem to be in good shape, and yet another stamp, that is obviously a cancel, that should show ink on the paper, but does not. The ink stops at the edge of the perfs, on the right hand side. How odd.

I think the year shown, on this stamp, is 1897.

John, thank you for sharing your RI cancels.

As for your question, I thought PPO was for Parcel Post Oval? The second stamp I posted in the OP, I believe to be a Providence, RI oval.

Or is there another term for them?

They are used on 3rd and 4th class mail? Or is there a distinction, and I have it all wrong.

I have seen on a couple of posts here they were referred to as that, since they are oval shaped. I looked at the Cole catalog and found one similar to the Louisville, KY one shown

Hence, 'PPO' is a 3rd or 4th class mail cancel? Let me know if I got it wrong and I will amend the title. Always enjoy learning something new, even if it means I got something bassackwards, or totally discombobulated.

Ahh, I understand what a parcel post oval is, yet the abbreviation of PPO is so underused in the hobby that its use did not communicate anything to me - and probably to most other readers. I try to use full terms and avoid most abbreviations and acronyms. It also makes future searches for old threads easier. These oval devices would have been used on any mail not needing a date, 3rd class, 4th class, and often the stamps on registered mail.

I appreciate the input, John. I edited the title, per your information about searches. I am a veteran and from a multi-generational military family. Acronyms are in my DNA. (All pun intended) I'm surprised it's not my middle name. Thanks for the reminder not everyone uses them, or knows what they are. It is good advice. I'll keep that in mind, for future posts.

A couple of Chicago, IL 3rd/4th class mail, (posting them upside down so you can see the cancel), and a Baltimore, MD parcel post oval.

This 219 looks pretty well centered, too.

Buffalo, NY

Some different types of NY 3rd and 4th class mail that, according to Cole, were also were used as town cancels.

New York City

I think this one is also Buffalo. I liked the centering of the stamp, too.

New York City

Nicely centered stamp with Boston, MA cancel with 'B.B.' in the oval.
