Sorting and ID'ing stamps that I picked up at club auction a couple of days ago--it was a cheap lot, had a few fakes, and even more misidentified Washington/Franklin issues.
I have taken some nice finds out of the lot and I think I may have stumbled upon a #10, position 10R1I, but I can't find a pic of one to be sure. I just started plating these a couple of months ago. I am using the Chase book and all available online sources, but really need to confirm with a pic.
So it has no inner lines, it is relief C--faint gash, no guide dot at top, and it has the engraver's slip (3 mm line outside the top of the left frame line--almost looks like a really thick frame line as it starts out). I've been studying this copy for a couple of days as it was labeled on back as "Pl 4" without a position. I have been comparing it to nearly every applicable stamp on the Ruecker site. Hehe.
Does anyone have a scan of 10R1I to post? I'm still waiting for Santa to bring me that new scanner so I can post pics. This could make my week as it will be the first 10/10A I have plated!

Achilles, You mention your stamp having a "Pl 4" annotation on back, but you think it may be #10 position 10R1i. I'm not aware of 10R1i having an engraver's slip, but slips in the left frame line are common on plate 4 impressions, so you likely have a #11 from plate 4. Please post a clear scan whenever you are able. Please see my recent post on plate 4 characteristics: https://goscf.com/t/46810#401410 |

Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely be posting a scan of this one. I was hoping you would have a copy of it. The mark is so clear and evident that I just knew I would be able to plate it. It's not a weak line though--it's as deep or deeper than the frame line. I too thought it was from plate 4, and painstakingly checked each scan on the Ruecker site from that plate. Then I went back to searching in the Chase book looking for any mention of a line like that and discovered the mention of "the engraver's slip" on page 90, paragraph 2. Here's a link. http://hdl.handle.net/2027/wu.89097...d=%3Bseq=100 br / |

I don't have a 10R1i.
Another important question is, what color does your stamp look like? If it is a #10, it should look orange brown. |

I'm not much on the colors yet. I only have one #10 for comparison. But Santa did come early so I have a scanner now. It took me a while to get this image. I still need some pointers and a lot more practice. I have this plated as position 10R1i. What do you think? Here's a good look at the upper left corner--what I believe to be the engraver's slip mentioned in an earlier post. |

I agree with the 10R1i plating but my Chase photos don't really show the frameline slip. Everything else matches well. |

Thanks for the confirmation Sinclair. Much appreciated and gives me a little more confidence in my plating ability. |

Achilles, I can see the frame line characteristics in your scans of the 10R1i on the Chase print, but the print is blurry so the split isn't discernible. However, the left frame line on this position distinctly angles in toward the upper left rosette from above and below, and it fades out adjacent to the rosette. Below is what the Chase print looks like. You're fortunate to have a clear impression that shows the split on this stamp. |

Thanks for the pic CC. Most excellent. Most of the 3 centers I have are 11/11A. The stamps I am struggling with the most are probably from Plates 4 and 6-8. No pics online. I'll probably be purchasing the Chase prints from those plates first. I am quickly running out of stamps to plate, but AmeriStamp is just around the corner and I'm sure I'll pick up some there. |
