Clark - Thanks? I have a very nice copy of "The Expert's Book" in my library.

Although still working on my Banknote-era issues right now, I am looking forward to my foray into Washington-Frankins sometime this fall. Years ago, one of my then mentors passed along the following bits of advice:
  • Assume any WF coil is fake, even if it has an older cert (this was early 80s).
  • Two-cent reds can ruin friendships but they aren't worth that much.
  • Watermarking yellows and oranges is problematic at best.

Having overheard at least three "discussions" of type at the Grand Rapids show this summer, and from the many threads here, I think they are still right on target.

It is a rotary press coil, large hole variety (small hole is scarce), probably a Scott 496, but if watermarked would be a Scott 458. It appears that the stamp passed through an affixing machine which would have cut the stamp off the roll on or somewhere near the perforations.
