I was looking at this imperf being sold on
ebay (listed as a #7, Type II). The photo is from
ebay, so I apologize for any lack in quality. It looks to me like a Relief B from Plates 1-3, so it probably is a #7. I have two questions that came up while I was studying the stamp and was hoping some of you more skilled and experienced at plating could answer:
1) The Plate 4 Reliefs that show plumes on the bottom all seem to show a stronger LEFT plume than right; whereas this stamp seems to have a stronger RIGHT plume (which seems more consistent with the Plates 1-3 Reliefs). Can that be used to determine the stamp is not from Plate 4 (useful for instances like this where parts of the design are cut away)?
2) Are one or both of the dots in the upper right guide dots? If so, I was unable to find the plate position based on them, and is this an unusually low position for them? The plate positions that are described as having a pair of dots in the upper right all seem to show the dots higher (more on level with the top of the design).
Thanks!
