I was looking at this imperf being sold on ebay (listed as a #7, Type II). The photo is from ebay, so I apologize for any lack in quality. It looks to me like a Relief B from Plates 1-3, so it probably is a #7. I have two questions that came up while I was studying the stamp and was hoping some of you more skilled and experienced at plating could answer:

1) The Plate 4 Reliefs that show plumes on the bottom all seem to show a stronger LEFT plume than right; whereas this stamp seems to have a stronger RIGHT plume (which seems more consistent with the Plates 1-3 Reliefs). Can that be used to determine the stamp is not from Plate 4 (useful for instances like this where parts of the design are cut away)?

2) Are one or both of the dots in the upper right guide dots? If so, I was unable to find the plate position based on them, and is this an unusually low position for them? The plate positions that are described as having a pair of dots in the upper right all seem to show the dots higher (more on level with the top of the design).

Thanks!

Commenting on my own post to bring it back to the top and see if anyone has any insights to the above questions. Merry Christmas!

I believe the only guide dot is the lower right. The upper 2 dots are not guide dots.

There is a guide dot at bottom right but neither of the dots in the upper right are guide dots. Maybe dirt, cancel ink, stray printing ink, etc. etc.

I think you need to study the plumes and scrolls a lot harder on plates 1,2, and 4. You won't get much opportunity to study Plate 3 stamps. They are scarce.
