Suspect in my mind as being rebacked. Reperfed on left side? Opinions?

Definitely re-perfed/perfs added on left, maybe on right as well. The valleys in perfs do not look wide enough to me. Staining on front could be a washed cancel as well. It does look nice at a glance, and is way better then my copies even if it is altered.

Thanks rwooden. I contacted the seller and he was kind enough to dip the stamp. I says it is not rebacked but did notice a vertical crease and also noted the reperf. He has updated the listing with this info. Yes, I thought this stamp pretty striking.

Just out of curiosity, would the watermark fluid reveal a backing issue, and what would the characteristics of this be? Would it show uneven/thin spots in the fluid?

Fill your tray with enough fluid so stamp does not sit on bottom. Drop stamp face down and watch closely how fast the stamp absorbs the fluid. A sound stamp will absorb the fluid quickly, a few seconds. A rebacked stamp slowly darkens from the edges. Sometimes the center doesn't absorb much at all at first.

The fluid will not soak through a rebacked stamp nearly as quickly as a normal stamp because it is two layers of paper with some kind of adhesive in between. So it will stay white for a while (possibly a long while) before turning the familiar grayish when wet. Rebacking is a major fault on postage stamps so there is no real need to look for any others. It's serious damage.
It is somewhat less of an issue on some taxpaid revenues because of their usages, although it is still an issue.

I would not have thought to drop stamp in fluid. 101 uses for watermark fluid???? Great concept, I have seen a few that were obvious by comparison to another stamp of the same. One not even valued enough to go through the effort (it was a revenue issue). Thanks for the advice. I was just getting started with wet scanning to aid in some misidentified Wash Franklins, that was a new one to me as well. Great info here on this site.
