First Stamp You Collected

What was your first stamp you ever collected? How did you get it and what is some info about it like scott # and release date?

Don't remember a specific stamp..just that my dad got me started as a child back in the 1950's...it was a great educational hobby (along with coins).

Sorry, Jser, but that was more than 50 years ago (Ouch!) and I can't be specific because I received an album along with a packet of a few hundred stamps as a gift. The first stamps I remember soaking, simply because there were so many of them and in different colors, were the 1951 Queen Elizabeth's from Great Britain, Scott Illustration A126, and the 1949 Queen Juliana's from the Netherlands, Scott Illustration A76.

I DO remember my first two stamp purchases(and my first drunk) I paid a nickle for a set of the Liberia airmails C3a-C3f..i thought they were the prettiest things I ever saw..and I paid 6 cents for the Iwo Jima Marines issue 3 center !!

Well mabe the first stamp I collected was a bag of 500 stamps for a dime from an ad in the back of Popular Mechanics..the bag arrived and what I got was heavy duplication of little blue steamboats from Belgium..but wait..mixed in the bag were a couple of approval sheets of 2 cent stamps...they were mint French Colonies in bright colors..you can imagine how they stood out against the drab Belgian duplicates..they were the most colorful artwork I had ever seen..i think that sealed the deal on stamp collecting..when they sent me a rubber stamp to make my purchases at least 25 cents per sending..i stopped returning the approvals...i have my code !!

My first stamps came from an add in a magazine as well. I think it was 500 stamps for $1.00. I was 10 and so exited. These kept me entertained for a almost a year.

My first stamps were the Bicentiennial issues - Scott #1563, 1704, 1718, and several others. I licked them and put them in the booklets the Post Office provided. I had several plate blocks from the mid-seventies, including the butterfly issues 1712-15 and the American Dance issue 1749-52. I still have some of them, but they are damaged.

Even at ten years old I was interested in history, and my favorite time was the Revolutionary War period. I was, and am, a great admirer of George Washington.

My collecting started during the late 60s. First it was cutting out the stamps on the letter we received in the mail. Then we would buy that "Big" orange bag of Foreign Stamps from H.E. Harris. After that there was this place near San Francisco that would sell real nice US mixtures. I'm trying to remember the name; "Morris Myers" rings a bell. My brother's and I put together a foreign collection & a US collection in a Harris album. We also had some books that I fondly remember. One of them was called "Strange stories behind stamps". I wish I could find that book again.

Phil88 as a wise man once told me sooner or later it all comes around..and its true..its amazing the stamps that come on the market when the time is right..the same with the book you would like to have again..its around out there either in the philatelic marketplace or perhaps on Amazon.com have you tried the stamp publications section on ebay ???

I think the first stamp I got was actually several stamps. My aunt took me out to dinner, Wrestling and to buy a stamp album for my 10th or 11th birthday. It was a Minkus U.S. album. I still have it after forty plus years. I got the stamps as a gift from my mom and dad. It was one of those packets you could get from a dime store. As a kid I really enjoyed stamp collecting. I still do. I guess I'm still a big old kid.

I get the feeling were all big kids at heart
