Parcel Post Stamps on First Class Mail

I was drawn to this postcard for its subject (one does not see that many postcards of City Island) and its cds (one does not see that many pieces postmarked City Island).

And the card got a third star because the subject & cds match, period.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1174730/ ... I first learned of City Island from the eponymous movie, an excellent family comic-drama starring Andy Garcia & Julianna Margulies.

I knew I was on the hook, and then I got a look at the stamp.

Initially, it was illegal to use Parcel Post stamps to pay the First Class Rate, and vice versa.

(Perhaps some bean-counter thought that this would be a useful way to double-check the revenue & traffic data being collected on first & fourth class mail.)

Motives aside, I can easily imagine postal clerks & customers rolling their eyes at this rule and, on 01/July/1913, it became lawful to, well, cross-post those stamps.

And, a few days later, this card was postmarked 07/July/1913. Fourth star!

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

Linn's http://www.linns.com/en/insights/st...livery-.html ... parcel post stamps on first class mail are hardly rare, but that does not make them less fun to find

Note the descriptive address, written in a lovely hand ...

I love the address. Even in a city as large as New York at the time, the post man was expected to know where the addressee lived.

Not on your card but some of those Artino cards have a swastika on the back - that was used before its association with Nazi's

paperhistory: Do you favor excellent handwriting, or do you select that cover for usage, stamps ...

Q/ Anybody got one with the parcel post stamps disallowed and, therefor, postage due?

Finding a pre-July 1, 1913 cover with parcel post stamps disallowed on first class mail and charged postage due would be an exhibit quality item. I don't think I've ever seen one, though I can't say I've really gone looking. It is worth noting that the parcel post postage due stamps had the same treatment and could be used as regular postage due stamps after July 1, 1913. Not common but can be found...

that particular cover was purchased as an unusual use for my Ohio flag cancel collection.
