I recently bought a US collection from one of those auctions and I'm breaking it down - some to keep - some to sell on ebay. The previous owner's identifications have been pretty good, but finding plenty of mistakes. Anyway, came across this nice looking page but I have no experience with confederate stamps at all. I took a quick look at my Scott Specialized catalog and I am truly lost. Stones? Is that like a plate? The red one used is more valuable than mint. Does that cancel have any chance of being legit?

Like I said, I have no background in Confederate.

I'm looking for any guidance you might like to provide to point me in the right direction. Are there some good documents or sites that have guidance for confederate identification? I'd like to learn enough to at get a start at this. Thanks in advance.

I love the Confeds, though I'm no expert.
there are two sights which are pretty good.

Trish Kaufmann and Dr. J Kimbrough are real experts. I've even email Kimbrough a couple of times with questions and he's been great to answer them.

Personally I'd have to say it looks like you have an amazing little pile there. At a glance they look legit, but you'd have to get really close to be sure with a couple. I think Sperati did some pretty convincing fakes.

A closer look just now showed me that the blue Davis in the lower left corner with the star cancel is a fake. I think the denomination reads TEN cents. This was only issued in 5¢. The 10¢ versions are what's called 'altered plates'. A long story, but the plate was produced and never issued. After the plate was rediscovered years later a number of copies were printed as facsimiles.

Here's a posting I did a couple of years ago with a brief outline of the story

Thanks for the pointers. The more I read about this topic it is clear that due to the number of varieties and fakes that it is a complex topic. Looking forward to seeing what I can do.
