This stamp came to me without identification. I would like to believe that the color is orange red, which would make it a 523. On the other hand, if it is a somewhat faded carmine then the stamp is a 547.

Can someone tell confidently from this scan?

gabriella77us,

Welcome to the fold!

Nicely centered and a beautiful stamp.

I can not give you any advice on it, but I
did see you out there. Thanks for chiming in
on my thread!

Your stamp is AWESOME!

See scan below, may or may not help...

left stamp is 523, two right stamps 547.. difficult to get color right on scanner.

hope this helps but I'm afraid this is exercise in futility (at least for me) without seeing stamps in person--

in grouping below, it is obvious if you saw these stamps together that the one on left is orange red. But on scanner it is hard!

Regardless, centering on your stamp looks like a 95+ grade to me. Good luck

rlmstamps2012: Thank you for the kind words!

rgstamp: Your scan increases my confidence that my stamp is a 523. On my monitor the color of my scan and the color of the left stamp in your scan look the same to me. When I hold my actual stamp next to other stamps that are listed as carmine, I definitely see a difference, but I do not have another 523 to compare. Thanks very much!

There is more orange than red in a 523. Comparing your stamp to other carmine or red W/Fs you should see the orange as the dominate color vs. any red in the stamp--if it is a 523 and not 547.

Pretty sure this is a 547. Pretty nicely centered, but how would you describe its condition, based on the scans?

Thanks.

Is there gum on the back? It is looking re-gummed from the scan. The paper fibers on the top of the stamp look glued together.

I'd take the hinge off to make sure there is not a thin hidden underneath it. If you moisten it carefully with stamp-lift, it should peel off and not damage the stamp.

I'll give it a closer look to see if there is gum.
Thanks for the reply.

Looks like you have a lower left corner crease, possibly a repair. Dip it in WM fluid.

Some pulled perfs and the top quarter of the stamp looks really dirty. Its nicely centered IMO.

Looking at the back of the stamp, the top perfs look odd, like there is re-gum in the holes.

Looks and feels like it has some gum on it. But I'm far from an expert.
