Hello everyone. Recently I purchased from a sale a large "lot" of vertical, horizontal coils of George W. 1 cent greens, and George W. 2 cent unused and used, including pair stamps that were not checked. He was not a stamp dealer, didn't care about them, and purchased for limited price for the "lot' of stamps from his table of items being sold.

These three used stamps I need assistance to help identify the " types" for correct Scott numbers. (1)Rotary Press Coil vertically, perforated 10
(2nd) Rotary Press Coil stamp horizontal perforated 10, and (3rd) imperf.coil.(1914)

Is the first a Scott 491, type 2 or Scott 492, Type 3? for 10 vertically? I believe it is a 491, but like second opinion.
Is the second stamp a Rotary Press Coil 487 carmine type 2 or a Scott 488 carmine type 3?
for 10 horizontally?

Is the third stamp a 2c carmine type 1 imperforated (1914)?
I read about perforations have been many times questioned with coils, however, seem to match correctly from one side to another on the two coil stamps, so not sure if tells if they are genuine.
Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Blazenstar. I believe you need to scan these a lot bigger for us to give some sort of idea!

Your large scans are big enough but they are way too out of focus to make a determination.

Sorry, Al.this old lady did not set up the scanner, not able to change the settings on it....if you can suggest a specific manner to get a more detailed picture, I would attempt again. It is a beautiful carmine color coil stamp.
I was having a difficult time due to the rope to tell the difference between Type 2 and 3 for the 10 perf. vertically. I checked photos with certifications by the P. Foundation, the robes looks different for the 491 than this stamp. With observation, doesn't look like strong heavy line with robe which noted in certs by P.F. In my opinion, the color does not look faded. It is also in a protective clear covering without hinged.
I have read identifying for Type 2's, the shading lines in ribbon are heavy. The shading lines of the face at the lock of hair end in a strong vertical curve line. This is used only on Rotary press printing. Type 3's, two lines in shading of curves of the ribbons and other characteristics like Type 2. I agree with you, this is a tough stamp to tell difference.
I guess it would be best to get it viewed by someone face to face to make sure about it. Thank you looking at them.

If the scanner didn't come with software or Photoshop Elements then download a program called VueScan. A free or trial version should be available. Although the learning curve may be steep, it will give you access to all of the capabilities of the scanner. A minimum 600 DPI (dots per inch) scan is needed, although 1200 DPI would be better if the scanner supports it.

They all look Type I to me (weak toga rope lines), but difficult to say for certain without magnification. Here is a good link that talks about types:
