When it's misidentified. I thought my bid of $265.00 would win it only to find out it got away. I'm kicking myself hard over this one. Imprint copies like this don't appear that often.

I think you answered your own question.

There was no real question there. I collect imprint 1¢ Franklins which is why I wanted the one shown.

Yah... I was another of the underbidders. Very nice item and I sorta wish I had bought one less ex-Kirke fancy cancels earlier this month. I did not have enough left in my 1st quarter budget to get this one.

That is actually a rare Plate 3 imprint copy. If I had bothered to plate it when I saw it I would have been in there bidding too. That is the second Plate 3 imprint copy that I have seen on ebay. The other is one of my own sad stories about letting one get away. It was much nicer than this one and also sold for quite a bit more. It was worth every penny but I was being stupid.

Winston, is it the deep color on this one that gives away the plate 3 without plating? Is this the typical deep blue that Neinken mentions?

Thanks! Ray

If it had looked anything like what I would expect a Plate 3 stamp to look like I would have investigated a little further. I was actually unimpressed by the stamp and had no interest in it. I can tell it is a Plate 3 stamp only by plating. I have a couple Plate 3 stamps and they are both a fairly bright shade of blue and nothing like this one on ebay.
