I'm guessing selvage; can you see even the ghost of an image/imprint?

You can see the remnants of the electric eye guides that were in the margins of the sheets (see the examples in this ebay lot - you have the little pieces of margin off to the left from this era of stamps) http://cgi.ebay.com/351647208566
