Hi All,
So i'm working on transferring stamps to a new album and I am having a hard time determining which type this stamp is. From what I read on line
I feel it could be a 23, but since I am just getting started, other then as a kid, I see there are a lot of different types, colors, etc. and I don't understand all the terminology yet.

Any help is appreciated.

There are a couple of differences but in this case one needs to look no further than the side ornaments. A type IV (Scott 23) will have complete side ornaments as where a type V (Scott 24)the left and right side ornaments are partly cut away.

#23 will have side ornaments on the right and left essentially complete and the curved line on top above U.S. Postage and/or the curved line below one cent will be re-cut. In some cases both curved lines re-cut.

Can you recommend a good website for reference photos? I was trying to use the Mystic site, but I swear the photo of the 23 and 24 are the same stamp.

What is meant by re-cut?

Just trying to learn.

Thanx.

You can browse here. Understand this is one of the more difficult US stamps to study and things just aren't that simple. People have been studying this particular stamp for over 150 years.

This is the best on-line site in my opinion. Understanding the types one should be able to wrap their head around at least.

Dave, I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I have lots of old US and foreign stamps. But I get lost with all the variations. Just looking to sell the entire collection, but don't want to get cheated.

I see the Swedish Tiger still promotes certain dealers as "Dealers of Integrity". What a travesty....

I guess they're actually called "Dealers of Quality" now.
