Does anyone know which firm used this perfin? I'm clueless...

Any help appreciated!

Appears to be a "3" in a circle. Not listed in my 1979 US perfin catalog but it should be.

Try C(3). It is in your catalog.

OK, C(3) is the perfin from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, Phladelphia, PA
This is a common pattern. Hope that helps.

I recently came upon a perfin on a rotary press W-F coil. It dawned on me that as many of these coils as I've seen I can't recall having seen one with a perfin. Is a perfin on a vertical W-F rotary coil common, scarce, or impossible?

Q/ Could the perfin not be rotated 90 degrees? (if you insisted on being right-side up)

Seems to me that I've seen perfins in every orientation ...

Cheers,

possible, not common, it would not make the perfin more valuable if it was a common perfin to start with

Ikey, I think you may be miss-interpreting Tipzi's question. He's not addressing orientation. He's asking for comment on how scarce or how common, based on the experience of others on the form, a perfin is on Washington/Franklin Rotary press vertically coiled stamps.

Chasa, if perfins are scarce, which may very well be(I don't recall seeing any), on W/F vertical coils, it may make any perfin'ed vertical coil stamp more desirable for W/F collectors and perhaps impact the value of the stamp--or maybe not--depends upon demand.

Tipzi, hope to see you Tuesday night, weather permitting.

See you then. If Ray catches this post perhaps he'll come too. I'll bring along some 1851-1860 stuff.

AEG - most perfin collctors do no care what denomination they come on, with obvious exceptions [which do not include WF coils]. All 'regular' collectors dislike perfins. Result = scant demand & unexciting valuation

Not impossible, so to speak, as I took the word "impossible" to mean from a mechanical PoV, not from a collectible PoV.
