Actually in 1853 the Philadelphia Post Office was in the Merchant's Exchange Building - http://www.nps.gov/inde/learn/histo...exchange.htm
The Philadelphia Despatch Post / Blood's Local Post "striding messenger" stamps (sorry can't get a link to work) show the local post messenger leaping over the Merchant's Exchange Building - basically bragging how must faster the local post was compared to the Post Office

The link I couldn't get to work is to an example of the local post stamp (Scott #s 15L3, 15L4, 15L5, 15L6) showing the local post messenger leaping over the Merchant's Exchange. There are a few examples in the upcoming Siegel auction (sale 1120 lots 1726 - 28)
