Perfin is listed as E3 Eaton Manufacturing of Cleveland, low value. Stamp is SC 637, not 557.

Hey Robert, that is a neat perfin! On another thread was a question about a "surcharge a cheval". Is this what one would call a "perfin a cheval"?

Okay, what is a perfin? Seems to be an established term, but I've never heard it before. And no, I don't live in a cave.

In philately, a perfin is a stamp that has had initials or a name perforated across it to discourage theft. The name is a contraction of perforated initials or perforated insignia. They are also sometimes called SPIFS (Stamps Perforated with Initials of Firms and Societies).

ddreisba...This is a Canadian perfin site, but it will give you some ideas.
