As I've proven before, I'm not a collector and far from an expert. So here's today's question. Is this a Scott 420, 12 perf? It looks like there were never perfs at the top. Nice color, light cancel very nice condition. Any thoughts on value or desirability? Thanks, as always.

Paul, this is a sheet stamp from the top row of the pane. You are correct in assuming that there were never any perforations on the top.

Lower. Straight edges are frowned upon. Here is the sheet layout for these stamps, yours comes from one of the black stamps on the upper row of the 2 bottom panes. |

Paul, if you are looking to sell the stamp, then yes--the general stamp market considers straight edges to be less desirable than perforated edges. However, there is nothing "wrong" with having a straight edge. It was part of the normal printing process, so I'm fine with stamps that have them. And overall, I think it is a very nice stamp with great centering and good color. |

lukusw, it's one of many I plan to put on ebay. Not being a collector, it takes me a while to even determine what I have. Both with my U.S. and foreign. |

Wouldn't the center stamp with the cut line on two sides of the stamp command a premium? I never have an issue with a straight edge but think it would be cool to have one with adjacent straight edges with cut lines on both edges. Or better yet, get all 4 of the center stamps as a group with different straight edges on different sides, all with the cut line.

Excellent examples of the corner pieces. I wonder why the price difference is so much. They are in the same series and neither has much value. The 1 cent that they want $99 for has what they call a "printer's crease" and I call a damaging fold that kills any value.
There again, the value is only in the eye of the beholder.
