Hi guys..I think I am getting a little better with American stamps...Is the top one a 254 and the bottom one a 280a...?

OK. The watermark here is the deciding factor I believe.

The top IS the SC280 colour. The bottom is the older colour but needs watermarking to identify.

Your top stamp definitely isn't 254 or 269 because of the color. It almost certainly is 280b, the orange brown color. Your stamps look unnaturally dark, either due to discoloration or scanning.

Below are my #280 (rose brown), #280a (lilac brown), and #280b (orange brown), left to right.
