I inherited a stamp collection. Some very old and some newer. Many were glued onto pages. Can someone tell me about these stamps? This stamp is a 3 cent George Washington. Buy the way I am new on this site. thanks Bill

Bill,

These stamps are likely common Scott #65. If so, the cover (envelope), in poor condition, would be valued at only a dollar or so. If it is a color variety (#64/64b), it would be worth much more.

This is why I am on here. I have no clue. There are so many that I am overwhelmed. I figure condition is always the factor.

Bill, welcome. You mentioned something about stamps being glued down. That is NOT good. Please tell us more about this; glue will most likely damage a stamp and you would want to take measures to prevent this.

Hi Bill,
Your post mentions the date 1868. Did you get that from something on the back of the cover, or inside the cover? I collect really only 2 stamps, and this is one of them-- the year dates are key, because printing and color wasn't perfect back then, and there were different shades in parts of every year. If it's 1868, there would probably be a grill on each stamp, but with the scan not focusing on the stamps, can't tell.

Someone else mentioned #64 and 64b, the May date on your cover shows that it probably could not be, since the greatest majority of those two stamps are only from August '61 to Jan/Feb of '62 at the latest.

Would be nice to know if it's a '68 cover, because if the stamps are grilled could be more value (not much more), but there are also some rare grills, which are only in dull rose shades..can't really see yours.

Thanks, Ray
