I have two Detroit Mich. covers with Scott #26 stamps and nice dated cancels. As you can see one is 1858 and the other 1861.

Upon closer inspection of the stamps, it appears they have very similar "relief breaks", plate flaws or maybe just wear. Certainly these don't appear to be from the same plate though...
Any thoughts or info as always appreciated.

I found an article stating that the "A" relief on the transfer roller was damaged. It's possible that's what I'm seeing on the stamps above.

Problem is..., the transfer roller was used on every plate 9 - 28.

Those are both A relief stamps. Every top row stamp from every plate, 9-28, are A relief stamps and are the so-called "damaged transfer" variety. It is better described as a damaged relief rather than a transfer. The more interesting positions are those that have been repaired in various ways.

Thanks.

I was hoping when I first saw this, it would help me plate the stamps. Pretty common though.

LOL, I even used one of the same covers.
What I learned that is new to me, is the same transfer roller was used on so many plates.

How much work has been done plating the repaired versions?
