I pulled out what I think are OB examples used in each month of 1851.

Sorry the scan is backwards. That's July far right.
As you can see I'm hedging on the July. The stamp is plated 94R1e. So it was printed Early in July. I'll use that stamp to mark the spot until I can find one better.

The Aug stamp I'm not certain on color. I would need to plate it before I lock it in place.
The Sep stamp I have plated as 22L2e.

Just thought I would share this mini display.

Before I actually read your post, I was questioning the August stamp. Based on the style of CDS used on that stamp, I am pretty sure it is not an 1851 usage. Can you post an image of that stamp by itself?

The photo doesn't exactly clear things up but it does show a general lack of detail which can be a clue sometimes. I am still going to say that it is impossible for that cancel to be on a stamp used in 1851 and perhaps even 1852. I am not very certain about when that particular device came into use.

Winston, with your thoughts on the cancel and my suspecting the color is wrong, I'm removing this stamp from my little display.

Hoping I have an OB Aug use already in my collection. If not...something to search for.

As always, thanks.

rlsny, I love these little pieces of paper. The 1851-57 3 cent has become a real fascination for me.
The help I receive from the members on this site, PRICELESS

It's the failed August stamp, summarily banished to the stampcrow doghouse, that I feel sorry for.

And that's not "dull red".
