This stamp baffled me for a while. It has complete top and side ornaments without re-engraving, indicating Type I - IIIA. But the only stamps from Plates 1-4 I could find that had that large gap in the bottom line are Relief C from Plate 4 and the other characteristics did not seem to match.

On closer look, however, there appears to be a line across the bottom third of the stamp with slight difference in markings above and below the line. I think this was a mangled Type II or IIIA that someone used the bottom portion of a Type V to repair!

Please let me know if any of you have alternate theories, or if I'm just misreading this stamp...oh, and it sold for $35 as a "#20".

A back view would be informative, but I think you are exactly right, lukusw. The bottom portion seems to have been taken from an E Relief Type V Scott #24. The lower right plume in particular does not match up between the two sections.

The back view showed a large paper piece adhered to the bottom half of the stamp--again, consistent with a repair.

Looks like it goes all the way to between the letters E&C of one and cents.

Actually it goes all the across and then up to just under Ben's shoulder.
