I picked up a folder of Scott #158's. It included this nice display of Dbl Paper variety.
First I've seen this. Thought I would share.
the second image is the same stamps flipped.

Nice! Different. That's a first view for me also. I've never had the courage to peel a double paper banknote. All mine were done by some else. Love the place scratch on this one, still on cover or I'd give him a bath.

phil, on the same page with these four, a horizontal pair noted as dbl paper. The paper is not pulled back. I'm not certain it's authentic. Tempted to give it half a bath.

Maybe dip a corner into the bath water?

I made a series of post on double paper back in 2014, in it essayk give us a look at a 90C double paper that used to belong to George Slone.

I can't find mine at the moment but I would encourage you to study your damaged singles first. It is possible to identify the stamps without being destructive. You have a nice find there but I consider all of the typical display methods of the double paper stamps, including this one, to be totally unacceptable.

Soaking is not a good way to separate double paper stamps. They are usually "teased" apart while dry. Thick paper which is not doubled may be teased apart sometimes, but usually does not separate cleanly as real double paper usually does. Soaking confuses the issue. BTW I do not recommend completely separating the layers. Just enough to remove doubt about the variety when examined. The less the better, in my book.

If it does not tease apart easily I suggest sending it for expert examination; if it is worth that much trouble.

Thanks folks.
essayk, the stamps in question is a horizontal pair. I don't think "value' wise it's worth certifying. Would like to identify it for display.
I'll try as you suggest.
