Lester Brookman in Vol II, pg 241 quotes from the catalogue of the Postage Stamps and Stamped Envelopes of the United Stated, compiled by Joseph B. Leavy of the United States Museum; "The Continental Bank Note Company printing with embossing are not listed as they are believed to be only essays at no time issued to the public."
The US Specialized has an entry for a used 158e, but I have not seen it.
I have 8 examples of the 3c Cont grill (incl a block and a pair), none are used.
Ron Burns has not mentioned having one.
The PF database has 46 submissions for 158e, 3 of which are used. All of the used items were certified as something other than 158e.
The Siegel database has 25 lots of blocks and singles, none of which are used.
I am not able to find my copy of the Morgenthau auction at which the original holding was first brought to the market. It has notes about used examples of certain denominations.
Most students of this topic follow Stevenson in denying that the Cont grill was regularly issued and consider the Cont grill to be a reuse prevention essay. It would be all but impossible to prove otherwise.
The PF had one of these in its list. You were led astray by the penciled ID on the reverse. Note the absence of the secret mark and the comparatively pale color. Your stamp is not a 158e, it is a 136A, 11x13 I-grill, well centered but with an unfortunate right side of ragged perfs. It would be a great example of the I-grill were it not for those perfs.
Ugh. I don't mind it's not a 158e. Even with the notation on the back I was skeptical. I'm miffed that I didn't recognize it doesn't have the secret mark.
