we are a newbie couple that were given a huge stamp collection...we know NOTHING lol...would appreciate any help or advice..this one caught my eye but not sure how to tell its value if any.
Judging by the perforations, this almost certainly is Scott #610, worth approximately 25 cents used in very fine condition. But this stamp appears to have problems in the upper left corner, with either a tear or crease. There is, however, a truly rare stamp (Scott #613, $40K) with almost the same dimensions. But there are minor differences. If interested in the easiest way to determine which stamp you have, search this forum for 613 ... then look for a post that discusses the use of cheap stamps as "templates". For this particular issue, you would use copies of 610 (flat plate, perf 11) and 612 (rotary, perf 10) as templates. The rarity (613) is rotary, perf 11 and the design would presumably be the same size as 612. Added: Sorry, you did say you were new to stamps. The difference between flat plate & rotary stamps with this design is that rotary stamps are slightly taller. By comparing your stamp's height to a known 610 & 612, you can determine whether it is 610 or 613 (it's not 612 because the perforation gauge doesn't match). The perforation gauge is the number of perforations that occur within a distance of 2 cm. There are tools (called perforation gauges) to assist in measuring perforations.
