I am not as familiar with the varieties of Sc #24 but saw this mark on the shoulder and was wondering if it is of interest or not.

I honestly don't know. The stamp is actually mine listed on ebay right now. It's position 99R5, as plated by Doporto. I'll be interested to see what others have to say about the mark.

99R5 is not illustrated in the Doporto plating archive, and the Neinken plating diagram for the position does not show any mark like this. I think the "mark" may be an optical illusion caused by the cancel.

I'll have to defer to matttodd1 on that one. I took it off ebay, he's the 'listor'!

Dudley, good observation. It could just be the bust lines and cancellation coming together to create this illusion of a 'pearl' of sorts on the bust.

If its a plate 5, could it be a 24Va? Looks like it might be to me?

Rats. I was going to scan the shoulder area of this today, but just ran out of time. I'll try again Monday. It is actually a type Va, certified as such.

That is almost surely an optical illusion.

Small chance of some variance in the paper i.e adherence or thin area, causing the cancel to skip, but unlikely.

Neat plate 5 stamp, however!

Okay - I was able to scan that little area around the "O" in the cancel as 1200 dpi. I think what we're seeing here is just the black cancellation ink, although I'm no expert. It is interesting though that it formed that particular pattern.

Matt

Are there any indications from the backside that it is a filled/painted pinhole?
