"Scar" On Washington's Neck? SC # 496

Can anyone explain, or has anyone seen, the mark on Washington's neck?

I did send this pair to the PF as a 496var. They certified it with this statement below.

This cert and a 496a, one of three, they also certed for me at the same time, had its image and text crossed. I am waiting for my corrected certs.

"JOINT LINE PAIR, RIGHT STAMP SCAR ON NECK.
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS A GENUINE SCOTT 496, BUT DECLINE OPINION WITH RESPECT TO THE ORIGIN OF THE MARK ON WASHINGTON'S NECK, AND ATTRIBUTION AS A "SCAR", THE JOINT LINE PAIR WITH THE LEFT STAMP PREVIOUSLY HINGED ALONG THE PERFORATIONS AT LEFT, THE RIGHT STAMP NEVER HINGED. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *"

I've not seen this before, which in the long run means very little. But Scott's does not list such a variation nor is it listed in French's 'Encyclopedia of Plate Varieties...' It may be more akin to an EFO.

Washington's and found this "SCAR ON NECK", Scott #634.



I doubt we will ever find one similar., but we can keep lookin!

Caper123, I now understand that the examples shown could be EFO's.
I was not familiar with "French's Encyclopedia of Plate Varieties".

My example means a lot to me, as I share a similar scar in the same area. Ten years or so ago while shaving, tapping my razor in the sink
to clean it's blade, I did not notice that my blade broke. It was not a throw away razor. Up to my neck it went. It was not a good day!

How many of any given variety need to be discovered to receive mention
in Scotts?

Turn the stamp of ciletaliphs upside down and look at it. Kinda looks likes Jesus on the cross to me.
