I had this for many years and never found out what this notch at the top of the coil was from. If used in production, what was its purpose? If added later, why?
This was not intentional, no purpose for it. It's a fault. The Schermack Mailing Machine only dispensed one stamp at a time. Pairs and strips did not pass through the machine but were removed from a coil. Perhaps the machine jammed, when this trio was removed the middle stamp was cut out or damaged in some way.
Can you make out a year date somewhere in the cancel? That would be a clue if was a contemporoy or if it was used later on philatelic mail.
No they are not common, especially those used commercially. Stamp dealers and stamp collectors were know to send them back and forth to each other and continued doing so for years and decades later. Many times the postmark will give a clue as to the sender.
Scott Specialized has slowly been recognizing V&A used multiples and have been starting to include some in their catalog. In their headline banner, to the V&A section, they state something to the effect "used pairs and multiples are extremely scarce and command prices equal to or greater than mint pairs" Obviously condition and a clear cancel add to that value.
I have a about 150 used V&A multiples in my collection and have still not found the time to properly mount them. Maybe this winter. lol Or maybe it's just time to sell them.
Thanks For the help! I got this in an accumulation. probably 20 years ago. It was loose and not consider worth anything! I have always tried to find multiples on cover but not much luck.
