Hey All,
I came across this oddity recently in a box lot. It's the 3 cent George Washington, perf. 11, mint lightly hinged. It appears to be a double impression. Can anyone confirm this? Also what type is it? There's at least four types in Scott. I just go blind after awhile.
Thanks, Will

Type 2. Looks like a double-struck to me.

This is not a true double impression. Its a "Kiss Print", sometimes called a Kiss Double. On Off-set printed stamps, sometimes there was movement of the sheet, or other factors, during printing causing these. They are not scarce, rare nor command a large premium.
It is Type-III, #529

Are you sure, Al? It doesn't look like the P and the O in Postage are touching - a determining characteristic of Type 3's.

Jack, Sorry to answer so late. Been away from home; just got back. I based my response on the button--which was wrong. Should have looked closer; It is a T-IV. Can I blame it on a senior moment? At least I got the Kiss Print part right.

Sorry, but not that either. The extra impression is from the blanket, an intermediate roller that transferred ink from the plate to the paper. If the blanket is not completely cleaned before inking the next impression, traces of the prior impression will remain. While in high school I had a job that included operating a sheet fed press similar to the ones used by the Bureau to print offset stamps. Too much ink and the paper would stick to the blanket and work its way back to the ink fountain making a big mess. Too little ink and the impression would be too light, a common problem with offset stamps. Not enough water to wash the blanket would result in fuzzy overinked or doubled prints.
