Hi All, I just found a 3cent washington stamp. It looks like a raised grill? Do I have to take it out o the book to find grill type? The album says stamp #74. Thank you in advance!

It does appear to have a grill; but do not put much weight in where it was previously mounted (always verify). Can you scan the back of the stamp? Don |

Elisa, you do not have to remove it, but it makes checking it a whole lot easier and more accurate if you take it off the page carefully. When you attempt to do it make sure the hinge comes off the page, not the stamp.

Hi all, In addition to grill marks - what about color?! #74 says it would be scarlet. Thanks Elisa |

Definitely not #74, which was ungrilled. It is considered a trial printing, and the color is distinctive. Many "used" examples come from a dealer who obtained them from the Post Office through some deal and "canceled" them with four horizontal pen strokes (these actually never went through the mail and could still have OG) |

Elisa, would be much easier to ID if you were able to scan the stamp instead of sending a snapshot. Need more detail.
From the front, it looks like the grill isn't straight, but can't see it well enough from the back of the stamp at all.
The shade is too deep to be an experimental grill "C", "D" or "Z"-- they are only available in dull rose. Your stamp is darker than those-- but also, it looks very wide, so I'm wondering if it's not a genuine grill. We'd have to see a better image, and I'm only guessing here, without seeing the grill with a detailed image.
Sorry and hope this helps, Ray |

My preliminary count suggests this grill is 18 points in height. I cannot be sure of the horizontal count, but cannot rule out either 14 or 15 points in width. 15x18 would be the size for a "D" grill (Scott #85) and 14x18 would be in range for a Z-grill (#85C). It is imperative that we get a good sharp image to pin down what you really do have, but it has some potential. The grill appears well impressed and should not be hard to "read" with a good scan. Since your original picture is dark, we cannot reliably tell the range of its shade.
If you can scan it into your computer, please scan the reverse and upload it. If not take it to Office Max, or someplace like that, and have them put a scan of the back side on a flash drive for you. Then upload it to us so we can tell what you have. |

My 2 cents it's a Scott 94 1861 issue with F grill.

If you are making this image with a camera, it would be particularly useful to have an image of the back with strong side-lighting to show the shadows of the grill pattern. If done with a scanner, it would be useful to have a scan of the back with the contrast/brightness cranked to a hi/low limit, again, to emphasize the grill. |

Okay. With a clearer pic I am consistently counting 14x17. E grill, Scott 88. |
