I know we've discussed this before, but I just can't get past some of the prices that are being asked. Here is another example (US SCott 639).

Listed on StampWants for $650

Listed on StampWants for $3

That is just incomprehensible to a country boy like me!

I bet you're one of those people that thinks price has something to do with cost and quality. It doesn't. Price is based on factors such as perception, emotion, timing, and ability to pay

Hi folks......

The centering of the first stamp is quite nice which is more than likely why the seller thinks he deserves $650.00.....just compare it to some of the graded stamps with astonishing prices. He wants his pile of cash without having it graded.......BUT.....I see what looks like some toning around the top that tells me that this is an inferior stamp regardless of the centering. It also seems like the two bottom right perfs are bent.....I'd pass even if it were listed at $6.50

Bottom line is....if you think/feel that a seller is just looking for a fool with money....well...you're probably right.

Well, the centering of the two isn't the same. The bottom stamp has something going on with the perforations at the bottom right. Does that justify the price difference? I don't know. If someone is willing to pay for the top stamp and are happy with the price, then who am I to judge.

It's the next logical step from the whole MNH vs. MH battle. Now that some people have expressed an interest in "virgin" stamps, now they have to be certified so.

It's okay for me -- I collect "mint" period. If I can pick up a copy for half the price because it has a slight gum disturbance, that's just fine with me. The one on the bottom isn't perfect either, but it works fine for me in comparison.

As for these stamps, $650 seems a bit much, considering the upper right and lower left corners aren't as nice as their corresponding mates.

No, I don't believe the asking price for a stamp has anything to do with its quality. What I meant, was, the top stamp does not look any different or better than the bottom stamp.

PSE graded stamps ! thats so far out of this collectors league I should not even comment on it...it sounds to me like some type of investment scheme and whos to say they would ever recoup what was paid ?? many years ago I purchased U.S. scott #327 for 17 dollars used..its worth about the same today..but I really liked the design...i see in scotts monthly that a mint 327 catalog $425 PSE graded sold for $43,125...i think my wife would re do the house with that kind of money rather than buy a stamp to put in a safe !!

Butch --- I followed your logic. I was just trying to interject some humor. Unfortunately, humor sometimes doesn't convey well in writing (especially mine :-)

There is no question that the upper stamp has better centering. Even if the reverse on the top one is flawless and isn't on the bottom one, I can't believe it's worth 216.7 times more.

IF it sells then it will prove - once again - "There's a sucker born every minute."

PSE or PF.....certificates are only opinions. We either agree or we don't.

Butch....

Certificates only give an opinion on whether or not the item is or is not identified correctly.

Grading is an opinion only on centering, arrived at by computerized measurements.

The APS does not grade anything.
