I have asked to borrow an exhibit frame to put on display at my stamp club's upcoming annual bourse in October. I just don't understand why our club had several frames available and have not put them to use at our own bourse or meetings. I think by mentioning this a few other members are going to put together a frame as well.

I am debating on doing a theme on Abraham Lincoln or Route 66. Regardless of topic I want to incorporate stamps, precancels, FDC's, event covers, and postcards. As of right now I don't know how many pages fit in the frame and what I can fit on a page. I am still gathering & organizing my material. I hope to have the frame by the end of the month.

For instance: if I did an exhibit on Lincoln I could just use covers & stamps from the 2009 Bicentennial set of 4. A little more traditional exhibit just using stamps and cover.

On the other hand, if I did an exhibit on Route 66 I could use my precancel town collection to map my way across the country. I could fill in some blanks with event pictorial postmark covers and postcards featuring people, places, and things along the way. I would think that would be more non-traditional.

What are your thoughts? Any advice is appreciated.

As cool as Lincoln is he has been done many times over.
I'd go Route 66 it's not seen that often and non collecters would be drawn to it as well.
Be a little different!

Josh,
I agree with Mike. Route 66 is the route to take [pun intended!].
I believe you have 16 pages to a frame.

Good luck and have fun getting it together.

Alright, 3 votes in favor of a Route 66 frame. Great, that is the 1 I was leaning towards. I think it would be seen as fresh & exciting. I am pretty sure the frame holds 16 pages. I will post scans of each page as it is completed for your viewing pleasure. Good thing I have nearly 4 months to complete it. This could be a slow process.

BTW & OT(somewhat)
I have also petitioned for a Youth table at the bourse, which I plan on volunteering at for most the day. Also, in the works is a "static" webpage for the Springfield Philatelic Society, I found info for a free webpage for APS chapters from Lloyd DeVries' the admin for Virtual Stamp Club. My wife said that I may end up the club president if I keep this up. I told her that I'm just shaking the cobwebs loose & getting the blood flowing. I want to liven up the meetings and interaction among old & new members. I am by far the youngest member, some of the oldtimers have been a member longer than I've been collecting (25 years) or alive (33 years). LOL

Regardless of which way you go I would love to see some pictures of the exhibit here, perhaps that will also motivate others to exhibit! Will this exhibit be judged?

No, the exhibit won't be judged. This was my idea, we'll see what direction it takes the club. The true definition of a bourse is a stamp show without exhibits.

Dude:

Keep it up! I am 43, and I'm the Vice-President of the Ottawa Philatelic Society, and I run the Youth Booth at the annual show.

Make sure you tell a story with your Route 66 exhibit. See that you get something in the exhibit referencing Nat King Cole. His song "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" popularised the highway, and got Americans pronouncing Route as "Root".

Good luck and keep us appraised.

David

Phil,
Since it isn't being judged, I don't think my skin needs to be very tough this go around. I will take a critique as a way to improve my collection and with a grain of salt.

David,
I am planning on moving westward from Chicago IL to Santa Monica CA, the traditional way to travel the route for my narrative journey. I will have to see if I have a Nat King Cole stamp, better yet would be a FDC. His version of the Route 66 song is by far one of the most well known out of 100's of recordings over the years. The song was written by Bobby Troup.

When I come to the USA, will I be able to get my 'Kicks' on Route 66 ??

This is a serious question. I know it has nothing to do with stamps but it is a serious question.

Londonbus1,
YES! You can still drive, walk, and bike around 80% of route 66. There are a few essentials however, since modern maps & GPS do not acknowledge historic route 66. I can suggest books, maps, websites, etc. for more info. If you ever make it here, I would love to meet you or anyone else from the forum. We can eat at the Cozy Dog Drive In, a must stop.
