I had posted a photo of this on another post but I cannot remember which one; so I don't know if anyone saw it and commented on it. I'd appreciate any help to confirm, or reject, the boot as genuine.
Thanks for your opinions guys, I appreciate it. Does anyone have a specialized catalog that shows cancel types. I've seen lots of boot cancels but only one other that appears to have a "leg" in the boot.
The stamp is a Scott #65 and was in use during the 1860s. If I recall correctly, though, all US stamps were rendered invalid for postage shortly after the outbreak of the Civil War. That was decreed by the Union government to prevent the Confederate government from using existing stamp stock to mail propaganda to the North.
