I hardly know where to begin. I started collecting stamps admittedly half hearted as a kid. I'm not entirely sure when or where I got my first stamps. I seem to remember being around 10 and sending away for those stamp offers in comic books or something like that. Littleton stamp Co. was one. Then there was the 'Big Bag of World Wide Stamps' from all over the world for a dollar. Man was that exiting, you got over 200 stamps! 35 years later, I'm wondering if they are still worth a dollar! Then a few years ago I found a Traveler Stamp Album from 1979 with some really neat stamps and got fired up again. I asked my wife to send me all the stamps she got from customers since her company gets letters from all over the world.
Recently I have been wondering about that trip to Tahiti I have always wanted to take. A recent Internet search to a few stamp sites and and e-bay made me realize I had enough valuable stamps to pay for a tank of gas. I think between my coin collection and post cards I may have enough for a second tank!
So,ok maybe not one of my better investments these stamps. But then an interesting thing happened. While I was researching, I really looked at all these stamps I had collected for over 35 years and began to appreciate them. I mean it would be great to have a rare stamp don't get me wrong. The thing that hit me was these stamps tell a story. Even though some are somewhat plain others reflect the era. I never got this feeling collecting coins and trying to complete a coin book. Wow, hey stamps are kind of neat. Who knew lol!
I found this forum and thought I would share. I'm hoping to learn some of the lingo as I have no idea what some of you are talking about. I'm hoping to learn a little more about the world of stamps and sharing some of my collection such as it is.

Welcome to our little family!

Your story is similar to that of many collectors. I've been in and out of stamp collecting many times as girls, baseball, college, work, fishing and other distractions came along. You will find plenty of valuable experience on the site so feel free to ask questions and post pics of your material!

We like pics!

Welcome, Cancelled1.

Seems like your collection is like mine, lots of it, but of little monetary value.

Hope you stick around.

Steve

Welcome cancelled1. I'm new here also. I've always wanted to collect stamps but until about a month ago, I never got around to it. This is all very new to me. I'm looking forward to learning about the hobby on this forum.

Welcome Cancelled1

Loved your story.

I recently started up again atfer being away for many years. The difference is I had given my collection away and started from 0 again.
I agree that stamps are really neat and that you can learn lots from them.

Cheers

Dianne

Welcome aboard cancelled1.

Glad you rediscovered stamps!

Just as you say, I never got much of a charge from coins, either.

Soon after I stared collecting stamps, I got a Whitman coin folder for Lincoln cents... a lot of that stuff was still in circulation in the 1950's... but as I added to my collection they were just little identical pieces of copper with different dates on them. So unexciting. There was so much more to the stamps, and they were colorful, too.

Most of us collect for fun. Most of the investor grade material gets snapped up by investors. Just enjoy it.
