I think that building a reference collection of printed fakes/forgeries is a worthwhile goal for some collectors. But like srailkb notes, building one of faked grills, reperfed stamps, or otherwise altered stamps would be of dubious value for the majority of collectors. I also agree that newer collectors would be better served in being discriminating in what they purchase; a skill that will offer returns for years to come.

It is also important that these type fakes not make it back into the marketplace. While we might have good intentions, we cannot predict getting run over by a bus tomorrow. It behooves us to make sure that in the event of our demise others do not have to revisit the same problem stamps.

When I sent in the double grill I found I sent in 6 fakes ones that APS take and put on file, they use them for reference and teaching aids they said.

huffy, the man who is posting about his ability to create fake grills by the dozens is a well respected and very knowledgeable stamp dealer, and has been for many years. His point has NOTHING to do with spending money, only with giving it away to people who deliberately create or sell fakes.

All,
Please refrain from the extraneous drama; at the end of the day our common ground is that we all care about our hobby and community.

I don't think anybody was making fun of you. Srails pointed remarks were mostly directed toward rgstamp. I agree with others that it is far better to learn first and then buy the genuine article rather than waste money on fakes.

I don't think rgstamp's ideas are all that bad. The OP should hang on to those fakes and compare them to genuine grills. That's what I would do if I was trying to learn, at least one of the things anyway.

So is there no charge if APEX keeps the fake?

Is there a charge if the fake is returned?

Is all of this free until a cert. is issued?

LOL

Lot of anger here. Sinclair I guess said it better than me... "hang on to those fakes and compare them"... that's all I was trying to say. What's the problem with placing the fakes in an album for reference comparison? Arranging them nice, analyzing and studying each one. Sorry if my words were misinterpreted as encouraging someone to buy lots of fakes. I' don't sell stamps. Never sold a stamp in my life. But I have many fakes in my collection. I don't throw them away. I collect them and hope to exhibit them next to the real thing in my album if I get the opportunity. I have done that here on this forum, just recently with SP Scott 175. Took me months of looking at those three stamps to figure out the purpose of how the fake was made, why it was made, etc.

Thus, I guess I still "respectfully" disagree

No,I sent in some stamps a couple of years ago and the one was a fake,I paid the bill but didn't really want the stamp back and they said they would take it so now if I buy a stamp with a grill and I know it's bogus I just hang on to it instead of throwing it away and give it to them when I send a stamp in for an evaluation,I buy 5-6 stamps a month from blurry pictures and there mostly fake stuff but like I said I really don't care about a couple of bucks, gets a stamp of the market too,if somebody out the is selling more than one I tell the website but most are just people who put up and old stamp and have no idea, they appreciate it,they teach with them at their headquarters.

If a member of APEX these fakes are costing the price of the stamp and $20-$25 for the cert. plus postage & insurance?

I see there is an $8 category. No opinion. What is the pricing on a returned fake please?

Just trying to learn.

Hi,I just give them away, not to get looked at,a bonus sent along with the order, kind of a "here they are, there your now take em",but yes if you send in a stamp to be evaluated and it turns out fake you still have to pay the fee, they did actually do a bit of work to determaine it was fake.

Huffy if this is what you want to do and collect and this gives you enjoyment with you not caring to lose a little which may not be losing money to you then by all means collect them. Who cares what others think it's what gives you the enjoyment. Some people like to only collecting mint stamps and some people on collecting used stamps because this is what they enjoy doing the same as what gives you enjoyment. I say go for what gives you the enjoyment.
