American banknote: hold up to light ... if mottled pattern throughout then soft porous paper. If no mottling then likely not soft ... is this what you are asking?

This called "soft porous paper" versus the "hard white"woven paper???

If "the heavily mottled look of the "soft porous" " is described in the right way, it is the "soft" paper that is WOVEN (symmetrical linen-binding) by excellence!

It is obvious that the term "mottled" has been used here without knowing much about the paper making process. ...

What makes sense in this context are the images of the perforation!

This is what has to be noticed! Not whether both cases of woven paper can be told apart.

Thanks Galeoptix and rgstamp for the info.

Don, should have gone to your site before I posted..Thanks.

So it looks like hairy fiberish perforations.

Looks like two different directions of paper!

The high one at the left with vertical and the wide one at the right with horizontal direction of paper. The highest level of shrinkage is perpendicular to the direction of paper due to the thick swollen - wet paper! - fibers getting thinner when shrinking...
