Thinking about buying a used Durland plate book, say a 1980's version, how far will back will it list the plate numbers, will it cover 1900 up to the date of the book? Is there something online I can use for free? Is there a better book to buy?
Thanks in advance

I would recommend a newer version as that is over 35 years old. I realize it's going to be less expensive, but it will only cover what was known AT THAT TIME through probably 1978 or 1979, with nothing afterwards. The pricing will be off as well, as that was the height of the market and prices have changed dramatically since.

I recommend either getting the latest version from the United States Stamp Society (you can find them on-line) or a more recent version (2010 or later) on ebay.

Hope this helps.

Stamp Smarter website has a free US Plate Number database with 57,000+ plate numbers. This includes all stamps from 1847 through 2016 plus most of the Back of Book stamps.

Durlands has an advantage over this free online resource because it also lists plate block values; something that Stamp Smarter does not get involved with.
