I cannot tell if this stamp was hinged or just stuck to another stamp. What do you guys think? Its a 1918 24 cent carmine and blue aimail unused scott # c3.

Looks like somebody bent over the selvedge and tried to place the hinge on it instead of the stamp itself. Unfortunately, there seems to have been a little bit of overflow.

Yes, it does look like the bottom of the stamp is a selvage folded over, it got stuck, and somebody tried to remove the stuck selvage but was only partially successful.

It also looks like to me that the stamp might have a hinge mark/remnant along the top.

This poor jewel is probably the victim of a number of lickings. I tend to agree with the selvage idea. I've seen cases of it before. It may have occurred as a result of too much humidity while hinged. I've also witnessed samples of this.

It's sad to see the back since the front looks so nice - still, it's a really good filler for almost any collection.

I'm sorry to say it's a filler only stamp, beside hing damage on the back of the stamp, it's off-centering leading to cutting off the right edge of the design.
The colors of the stamp is great!

it is my understanding that the scanner cut off the edges, not that the stamp has straight edges. Am I thinking correctly?

I have several stamps, particularly in the classic era with absolutely gorgeous fronts, but the backs have problems. Since I don't look at the back of the stamps, and I don't care about the resale value, what's the problem? WHich had you rather have, a stamp with an absolutely problem free back, but with a scrape on the front, or a perfect front with a scrape on the back?

That's a beautiful stamp. Don't worry about the back. Most of here are collectors, not resellers. This copy would look good in anyone's collection.

As A collector I would have this stamps based on the front.
An investor(Which I am not)would stay away from this because of the re-sale value.
A nice set to collect.
