This is a 1945, just right after WW2, issued in the Phillippines also just before being granted independence by USA.

What is the term for the overwrite words like "victory" and "commonwealth" I have a lot of stamps which were stamped with black letters of a variety of words, and I don't know what to make of these.

Knowing the word-term and it's add-on value on the stamp, if any, would be appreciated. thanks

The term usually used for this is "overprint".

As stated gvcoll they are overprints. The "victory" overprint was propaganda, unnessasary, in the victory over Japanese forces in the Phillipines. The "Commonwealth" overprint was to make a point that the Phillipines have been restored to their prewar status as a Commonwelth & that a independent republic, even though a puppet of Japan, was no longer in place.

Thanks Tina! I am just amazed at the way stamp collecting has evolved, if you'l notice, the 30 to 50 year old stamps really dont have great color & pictures, just about 6 colors. Today the stamps are minimum 8 color systems to full photo qualities, WoW!
