i am a little reluctant to talk about stamp "values" but I am a raw recruit on pre cancels...i have many nice pre cancelled Franklins...9 cent, 11 cent, 20 cent, 30 cent etc: that would catalog fairly high if not pre cancelled..please tell me the effect of the precancel on the stamp as far as catalog value..i am almost afraid to ask !!

From my understanding the value of a precancel has nothing to do with the stamp itself, it has to do with the cancel.
Phil, check out the PSS website for more info.

Theoretically, It is the stamp listed value plus the precancel value.
In practice if the value of the precancel is greater then then normal stamp, precancel value is used. If stamp is of a higher value it becomes blurry.
Many collectors & dealers of US stamps have no interest in precancels, they don't understand them, sometimes they sell them at reduce rates like they were damaged or try to sell them at the same value as the standard issue & wonder way no one buys them. They don't know how to market them.
The precancel itself trumps the stamp and it's condition.
An example would be a precancel valued at $60 on a damaged 1cent Prexie, worthless in that condition, can sell for $30 or more dollars depending on need and availability.

The 1.5-2 million figure is for all US precancels, not just the Prexies.

I'm quoting myself here and nobody called me on this but since it was a bit ambiguous, it merits a clarification. There are not 1.5 to 2 million LOCAL PRECANCEL types. Rather there are that many different LOCAL PRECANCELED stamps.

For example, the same local type may be on 100 different Scott numbers. So that would be 100 different precanceled Scott numbers but all with only 1 local precancel type. Is this clear or did I muddy the water?

Phil, I have a good example in line with Mike's quote. It is a Scott 342 $1.00 Washington with a Philadelphia, PA precancel. I think it is valued around $80.00. I picked it up for around $5.00 off of ebay last year.

Another silent Prexie precancel.

On Scott 804, 6 printed lines, each .2mm wide, spread over 16.75mm.
This is a local, but origin is unknown.
