Here is a rough draft of my title sheet.....
Come along on a whirlwind road trip across historic Route 66. We will be traveling East to West beginning in Chicago and ending approximately 2,448 miles and 8 states later in Santa Monica. U.S. Highway 66 was commissioned on November 11, 1926. The highway is known by many names: the hard road, route 66, the mother road, america's main street, the will rogers highway, and bloody 66 to name a few. The road has been placed into our cultural consciousness by John Steinbeck's 1939 novel The Grapes of Wraith, Nat King Cole's 1946 rendition of the Bobby Troup song Get Your Kicks On Route 66, the 1960-1964 television series Route 66 starring Martin Milner and George Maharis, and the 2006 Disney/Pixar movie CARS most recently. Route 66 is known worldwide as a travel destination in and of itself. Along the way you will see large metropolitan cities, small town life, eat at mom and pop diners, see quirky roadside attractions, visit National historic landmarks, view awesome natural wonders and landscapes, and of course meet wonderful people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. U.S. Highway 66 was officially decommissioned in 1984. It had been bypassed completely by Interstates 55, 44, 40, 15, and 10. In response to public demand in 1999 Congress passed an act to instate the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program. The National Park Service administers the program to help nonprofit organizations, communities, private owners, and all levels of government to identify preservation needs. There are several places on Historic Route 66 on the National Registry of Historic Places. Also, the Smithsonian's National Museum in Washington D.C. has an exhibit entitled America On The Move that has an actual section of original Route 66 roadbed that was saved from destruction. Throughout the years Route 66 had several different alignments and nearly 90% of the highway is still drivable over 83 years later. Now it is time to get behind the wheel of your shiny, red, convertible 1956 Chevrolet Corvette and Get Your Kicks on Route 66. Enjoy the ride!
The following 8 pages will be some of the towns found along the road compiled from US Precanceled stamps known as bureaus and town and type. You will see a variety of definitives, commemoratives, postage dues, and postal stationary that span decades. The states represented along the Mother Road are Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

Here is a link to my photo album with quite a few of my route 66 postmarks. Included is my Radiator Springs cachet that I personally had autographed by Michael Wallis the voice of Sheriff in CARS. This will give you an idea of what I have in mind for the remainder of my exhibit. http://www.route66people.com/photo/...k-collection |

Well, I have all 8 pages in the frame and have just enough room to make a 2 inch high "road" between the 2 rows. I will also be putting a route 66 highway shield to represent each of the 8 states along the road. This should liven up the frame a bit. I have also procured 4 more frames to fill. I hope I have enough time to fill them accordingly. The bourse is only 12 days away and I'll be out of town the day & night before. |

Balf, Thanks. I had my wife proof read the title page last night and she thought it was fine as well. I was sorting my pictorial postmark covers last night by state for the next frame. "Time keeps on slip'n, slip'n, slip'n into the future". Just 8 days left to add more content. |

Thanks Harry. All I know is that it is of interest to me. Maybe some of the dealers will find some material for me because of the display! |

Dude, you have one great display! You just might single-handedly move precancels out of the back seat.

I have filled the 4 other frames for the exhibit this past week, mostly yesterday. Well, I actually still have to mount 6 more covers, I ran out of corner mounts. I have also used up all our label tape. Since I will be propping the frames up on a table against a wall I will be typing up a small description page for each frame. I really had to limit what I put in the frames, too much material. I did not have enough frames for my postcards. I used mostly my covers with 1 frame for a large for a set of 8 map postcards, my own partially completed Illinois Route 66 postmark map, and a Fun Run map with the 5 towns pictorial postmarks. I will post pictures of each frame when I am able. My laptop is being looked at as to why it won't power up. |
