While crusing thru some stock for others came across this one. Anybody have any thoughts on it. It has been checked and does have original gum. The inscription looks like "PWS" I believe. Just wondering what it might mean.

Hi Harry. I knew that one was coming. It is one of those ones that just seem different, if you know what I mean. Graffit possible, just a odd one though. |

Most probably the initials of the postal clerk or carrier who pen cancelled the stamps. |

G'Day Bob with all the GGGG's Very strange to have some one cancel it with a signature instead of the marking monkey scribble which would have been easier for them, though I do relent and stand corrected in this matter ,so who ever signed it as a cancellation did with his initials may be to prove that the parcel had been delivered . |

Interesting, No documentation as a silent precancel. Likely a provisional cancel by PO worker or even Postmaster running out of regular canceling ink.

One thing that seems to have not been thought about, is that this pair of stamps still has the original gum. Unless someone used a selvage edge to attach them to an envelope or parcel, or just set them behind a plastic covering, then they haven't been used. So are they still technically pen canceled? Or are they just a pair of stamps with graffiti, as was mentioned? |

laswabbie, Good thinking, but that issue is 97 years after the first used precancel in 1847.

On the upper left edge there appears to be some smudges. Could those be the remnants of a postmark cancel? Maybe the person initialing the stamps was trying to be proactive & productive and then never used them on cover. |

The upper left has a little corner damage so that is what you see. They are unused, you can even see the gum breakers on the back. |

If the are used it is likely a provisional cancel by PO worker or even Postmaster running out of regular canceling ink.
If it is unused then it could be a provisional or psuedo precancel.
The first one being the most likely.
