Is this one of the H.E.Harris Honor-Bilt approval packets? (I found this in an old collection while searching for prexie precancels.) I like the fancy scroll work around the edges.
Wow...that's an old one! I'm guessing that one dates from the '40s. The ones I'm more used to seeing were larger in size and came in two colors -- blue for the US, green for the rest of the world.
It might have been an approval packet but from my memory, Harris approvals came in glassines, the window envelopes were used to sell stamps through retail outlets. Woolworth's carried them.
Yes, that is entirely correct. It didn't matter where you were, the local Woolworth's always had a stamp section, located somewhere in the toy department. In our neck of the woods, when Woolworth's went belly-up, the local Ben Franklin Store started to stock Harris' wares.
Not sure on the age of that packet. The collection that came from had a little Arthur Maury album from Paris in it with a hand-written date of 1899 from St Pierre et Miquelon in the front. It was passed down and had different people adding to it over the years. I will have many questions about the older stamps. I have just looked at the Canada and St Pierre stamps so far.
I remember Woolworth's here in the 60's and 70's (as far back as I remember!)
I am just starting to look at the US stamps in it. I will post the revenues in a new topic to ask about them.
I have a couple of Harris coin folders and it has Florence Alabama on them. Does this mean that they are located in Florence, or is that just a distribution point,or what?
