I'm willing to sell sponsorship for my collection. Sort of like a race car. $25k will get you one square foot on the side of my old album. I'll be glad to plaster your corporate decal on there. The back of the album naturally will be deeply discounted. |

I sold my original US Revenue collection in the 80's and paid off College. I have replaced almost all of it and added considerably to it. Quote: Valuation depends on 4 parameters - condition, rarity, market atmosphere and current trends. I have sold for 300% of Cat. or more and I have sold for pennies. The valuation of a collection changes constantly. It also will change depending on how fast a dealer thinks he can turn a profit on it. Bottom line: So, what is it worth? As much as someone is willing to pay for it. |

Spock, 1st if you are buying, buy QUALITY. Quality never goes out of style! If given the option of Avg/Fine vs. VF/EX and you can afford the differance go for the better condition. Saving a few $ normally is not worth it when going to sell. A dealer knows he can sell better condition faster and for more. So, they are willing to pay more. You will also be happier when looking at your collection. If it is a stamp I need to complete a set etc. I may go for lower quality. Provided it is a difficult stamp to find. Otherwise, I will pass unless I get a steep discount. Scott prices are for F/VF so exceptional stamps often bring more! It is up to you as the seller to know what is AVG-EX for the issue. For example US Revenue R31 Scott value is about $2000.00 Less than 10% are well centerd. You can buy 1 for $1300-$2000. If you can find a well centerd copy(good luck) it would cost you AT LEAST $2250-$3000. I used this example just because I know the numbers off the top of my head. I have been looking for a reasonably priced above AVG copy of this stamp for some time. I do have one but will sell it at that time. Buy the way I did pay 20% below cat several years ago. That was the only way I would have bought it. Lesson 1 complete. |

The problem, however, is that Scott uses the sliding scale for categorizing VF -- depending largely on era of issue, but also for some specific issues that are notoriously poorly centered or are not known to exist with 4 good margins.
Scott notates the so-called standard that they use for grading in the introduction to their catalog. But that is still very generalized. It is better to do some market research (pretty easy now with the internet) and know the real-life grading scale used for some specific issues. Revstampman gave a good example. |

Quote: Just goes to show how interested I am in Cat. pricing (unless buying/selling). Yeah, I figured that since Scott changed the policy about 20 years ago! But yes, you have what I would say is the proper viewpoint. I always look at Scott catalog prices as if there were an asterisk by each value. A lot of Scott catalog prices are what I call "formula prices". But I will say they have done a much better job of getting out of that "automatic pricing mode" in the past 10 years. It is better to personally know/evaluate the market before buying/selling, rather than just relying on Scott. My opinion. |
